To bolster asymmetric warfare capabilities, Taiwan’s military has been advancing its development of unmanned combat systems, with the "Kuai-Chi Project" suicide attack drone boat by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) attracting significant attention. Expected to enter mass production as early as next year, the institute has announced an open trial in June, inviting domestic manufacturers with similar products to participate, aiming to refine technology and enhance combat capabilities.

近年來,隨著無人載具技術的快速發展,攻擊型無人艇已成為各國海軍重點關注項目。烏克蘭戰場上,無人艇成功重創俄軍艦艇的案例,也讓各國加速投入相關技術研發。中科院去年啟動「快奇專案」,研製搭載炸藥、具遠端操控能力的自殺攻擊無人艇,計畫在年底前完成作戰測評,並根據軍方需求,最快於明年量產。據悉,陸軍對此裝備表現出高度興趣,可能採購超過200艘。
With rapid advancements in unmanned vehicle technology, attack USVs (Unmanned Surface Vessels) have gained significant attention from navies worldwide. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated the effectiveness of drone boats in damaging enemy warships, prompting nations to accelerate their research. Taiwan's NCSIST initiated the "Kuai-Chi Project" last year to develop a remotely operated suicide attack drone boat equipped with explosives. The institute plans to complete combat evaluations by the end of this year, and if requested by the military, mass production could begin as early as next year. Reports suggest that the Army is particularly interested in acquiring over 200 units.

為使攻擊型無人艇達到最佳規格,中科院決定與民間科技業者合作,預計6月在宜蘭蘇澳外海進行實戰測試,並透過九項指標驗證遙導控技術、任務酬載能力及海上性能等關鍵參數。中科院強調,這次測試並非單純的競爭,而是希望整合國內技術資源,制定最符合臺灣防衛需求的無人艇標準。
To ensure the attack USV meets the highest standards, NCSIST is collaborating with private technology firms for an open-sea trial off the coast of Su'ao, Yilan, in June. The tests will evaluate nine key performance indicators, including remote control guidance, payload capabilities, and maritime maneuverability. The institute emphasized that this event is not merely a competition but an opportunity to consolidate domestic technological resources and establish a benchmark for Taiwan’s defense needs.
知情人士透露,由於攻擊型無人艇的規格尚無國際標準可循,中科院參考美國與烏克蘭的案例進行設計,但考量台海作戰環境與黑海不同,因此希望透過公開測試汲取多方經驗,以制定最符合臺灣需求的標準。同時,官方軍事機構擁有進行高風險測試的能力與場地,也能協助民間廠商驗證產品性能,加速未來軍事科技產業的發展。
According to insiders, since there is no established international standard for attack USVs, NCSIST has drawn references from the United States and Ukraine. However, due to the strategic differences between the Taiwan Strait and the Black Sea, the institute aims to gather broader insights through this open trial to establish a defense system tailored to Taiwan’s specific needs. Additionally, with access to secured testing grounds, government defense agencies can assist private firms in validating their technologies, accelerating the growth of Taiwan’s defense industry.
