The history of the slaughterhouse in Taichung’s Minlong Community
Minlong Lane in Taichung’s West District was the site of Taichung’s early slaughterhouse and pig auction house. At that time, slaughtering was carried out manually. The majority of animals slaughtered were pigs, followed by cattle, and then goats. Minlong Community Development Association is promoting its precious historical culture by producing a community map and creative pig dolls.
In the early days, a monument was built in the slaughterhouse to worship the souls of animals slaughtered and show gratitude for their sacrifice. At present, only the former pedestal is left, which is still in the office of Minlong village warden. Every year on August 1st of the lunar calendar, there was a grand ceremony where residents would make offerings of flour to worship the souls of animals. The community of Minlong has organized several local activities to close the generation gap and help pass on the area’s rich history and culture to future generations.
