Using Guide Dog Training Methods to Help Stray Dogs Find Homes
Su Ting-feng, founder of Taiwan's Hope For Strays Association (台灣攜旺浪犬教育協會) and a former guide dog trainer, applies guide dog training techniques to rehabilitate stray dogs. The goal is to evaluate whether the dogs’ behavior and socialization can improve significantly, increasing their adoptability and chances of finding a forever home.
Su emphasizes that stray dog training should be rooted in understanding and respect, not coercion. Tailored guidance based on each dog's unique personality is key, with treats used as rewards to motivate learning and foster a sense of achievement. Su also recruits volunteers to assist with daily interactions, such as leash training, grooming, and tooth brushing, helping the dogs gradually build trust in humans and enhance their social skills.
These methods not only stabilize the dogs' behavior but also help them integrate better into human society, paving the way for successful adoptions.
