The Changing Landscape of the Drone Industry: Global Strategies in the Era of De-Sinicization

Drones Become a Key Player on the Battlefield

Although peace negotiations for the Russia-Ukraine war are underway, the conflict’s influence on global military strategy continues to expand. Drones have emerged as a crucial battlefield asset, playing an irreplaceable role in securing air superiority and executing precision strikes. From the Russia-Ukraine conflict to the Middle Eastern battlegrounds, the adoption of drones has reshaped traditional warfare, prompting nations to accelerate their development of indigenous drone technologies to strengthen military capabilities.

U.S. and South Korea Expand Drone Deployment Amid Rising Indo-Pacific Tensions

The U.S. government has allocated over $1 billion to advance drone technology and launched the "Replicator" and "Replicator 2" programs, with a focus on deploying cost-effective autonomous drones in the Indo-Pacific region. South Korea is also expanding its military drone operations, aiming to establish its first drone unit by 2027. These strategic moves highlight that drones are no longer merely support tools for individual military branches but are now decisive assets in modern warfare.

Taiwan Expands Drone Industry Chain to Compete in Global Markets

Taiwan is also making significant strides in its drone industry. The Ministry of National Defense has allocated funding to support the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) in developing and mass-producing the Teng Yun II, Rui Yuan II, Jian Xiang drones, and cruise missiles. Additionally, the government plans to procure over 3,000 military-grade commercial drones within four years to address regional security challenges.

U.S.-China Drone Tech Rivalry Positions Taiwan as a Key Supplier

The U.S. has intensified restrictions on Chinese drone technology, blacklisting companies like DJI and BGI, while China has countered by limiting exports of critical drone components. This has disrupted the U.S. supply chain, with companies like Skydio scrambling to find alternative suppliers, including Taiwan, after facing battery shortages. The U.S. has also emphasized strengthening its technological cooperation with Taiwan to develop a "non-Red supply chain," reducing dependence on Chinese manufacturing.

Taiwan’s Technological Challenges and Path to Breakthroughs

Although Taiwan’s drone industry is rapidly developing, its production scale and technology still lag behind China. The reliance on foreign suppliers for key components remains a challenge in competing internationally. To overcome this bottleneck, the government has launched a subsidy program for drone chip development, focusing on AI image processing chips and flight control technology. It is also reinforcing the "Three Chips and Two Software" initiative—communication chips, satellite positioning chips, flight control software, and ground control software. If Taiwan’s drone products aim to enter the U.S. market, they must pass the CMMC cybersecurity certification, and the government has already initiated relevant guidance programs.

Drone Industry Advancement Hinges on Battery Technology

Taiwan’s drone industry ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with the Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) leading the "Taiwan Drone International Business Opportunity Alliance" (TEDIBOA), which has attracted nearly 200 companies specializing in chips, software, and power systems. Battery technology has also become a critical factor in enhancing drone performance. Industry players are investing in next-generation high-energy-density batteries to improve drone endurance and payload capacity, further increasing their global competitiveness.
