Japan Enhances Defense: Developing New Missiles to Counter Potential Invasions
Japan’s Ministry of Defense has recently signed a contract worth 32 billion yen (approximately $216 million) with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to develop new long-range precision-guided missiles aimed at bolstering the Self-Defense Forces’ capabilities.
Features and Objectives of the New Missiles
These new missiles will possess the following characteristics:
- Long-Range Strike Capability: Enabling attacks on distant targets to enhance Japan’s defense depth.
- High-Precision Targeting: Capable of accurately striking vulnerable parts of enemy vessels and traversing Japan’s mountainous terrain to hit land-based targets with high accuracy.
The Ministry of Defense stated that the primary purpose of these missiles is to “prevent and eliminate invading troops” in response to multiple regional threats.
Development Timeline and Budget
According to the plan, the contract will last until 2028, with the new missiles expected to be completed by 2032. Additionally, the Japanese government has allocated approximately 939 billion yen to enhance defense capabilities, including:
- 16.8 billion yen for the development of Type 12 surface-to-ship missiles.
- 3 billion yen for the research and development of submarine-launched guided missiles.
- 29.3 billion yen for the development of high-velocity gliding missiles for island defense.
International Cooperation and Regional Security
In addition to developing missiles domestically, Japan plans to purchase 400 Tomahawk missiles from the United States and expedite the deployment of some Tomahawk and Type 12 surface-to-ship missiles. Furthermore, Japan is collaborating with the U.S. to co-develop AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles, further strengthening its defense capabilities.
During his visit to Japan, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized that Japan is “an indispensable partner in deterring Communist Chinese military aggression.”
