Old-street revamp proving tough! Bopiliao report
Located in Taipei’s Wanhua District, Bopiliao was one of the filming locations for the movie Monga. After renovation, managed by the Department of Cultural Affairs, the street is now a place of historical importance. The old-fashioned Fujianese architecture gives tourists a deep sense of historical nostalgia. The street’s management unit said main purpose was to provide an exhibition space for arts and culture, and provide assistance for movie shooting.
Unfortunately, with a lack of adequate staffing and proper planning, and only exhibitions clearly indicated, the original feel and special characteristics of Bopiliao have been lost. To make things worse, doors along the street are left fully open, effectively turning on the air-conditioning in an open street! The old street’s transformation is now a priority for the city government, which through renovation and careful maintenance can effectively use this important piece of cultural heritage. But just how to properly manage and use this excellent resource still needs some prudent thinking from the authorities.
