On Christmas Eve, when most people were enjoying the warm festivities, human rights groups held a press conference to accuse city councilor, Ying Xiao-wei, after the councilor accidentally blurted out support for city workers using water sprays to chase away homeless from city parks. Human right’s groups, who have heavily denounced this outburst, brought some of the homeless persons in to give a personal account. The group of homeless persons sobbed as they recounted how on such cold and wintry nights, instead of being given warmth and care, they were driven away with the use of cold-water sprays. In the name of ‘cleaning’ the authorities have heartlessly driven away homeless persons including the elderly, middle-aged, women and young people, using freezing water. This is a despicable and savage attack on the dignity of our city’s poor persons - an act that clearly violates human rights.
