Degeneration of 100-year-old Chiayi Park

   Situated at the end of Zhongshan Rd, ‘Chiayi Park’ is honored as
possessing the longest history of any park in the country. However,
the park is increasingly coming under pressure from the weight of a
burgeoning city and the related problems this brings. Chiayi Park,
which was once celebrated by the renowned artist Chen Cheng-po, has
now degenerated into nothing more than an outdoor massage parlor.
Under official park signs forbidding the massage business, many people
swagger around engaged in drumming up business for the massage traders
who nonchalantly place their massage stools around the park, and exude
a cocky air of, “What are you going to do about me?” This is the state
of our precious 100-year-old park.

    嘉義市中山路底的「嘉義公園」，不但是擁有全國歷史最悠久的榮銜，公園裡更
承載了這座城市的發展軌跡，更曾經是台灣前輩畫家陳澄波筆下的彩衣，但現在的嘉
義公園竟然成為「按摩小棧」，被民眾戲稱為「戶外馬殺雞」廣場，許多人就在公園
內招攬客人做按摩的服務，諷刺的是公園管理單位雖然貼出「禁止按摩營利」的警告
單，但以此為生的按摩工作者，卻大搖大擺地放起椅子作生意，一副你能奈我何的態
度，百年公園就這麼淪陷了。
