Houlong’s fish-weir craftsmen

If fish weirs were to come up in conversation, probably the first place
that would come to mind would be the outlying island of Penghu, with its
beautiful ‘Twin Heart Stone’ at Chimei. What most people don’t know is
that a famous scenic spot on the Taiwanese mainland also has stones.

In the past, Miaoli was inhabited with a mixture of Han Chinese and
indigenous people from the Pingpu Tribe, which at its height had more than
20 fish weirs. However, neglect of maintenance in recent years has resulted
in the collapse of the old fish weirs. Fortunately, many local people are
actively getting involved and hoping to repair the weirs with a view to
building an attractive feature that can attract tourists to the area.
