Taoyuan county government goes back on its word

Datong River, which is a tributary of Daku River, is not the longest of rivers but still retains some enchanting natural beauty in its upper reaches. The year before last, Daku River Cultural Association carried out an ecological survey where they captured Long-armed Shrimp and Taiwanese Bitterling (Paracheilognathus himantegus), indicating low-water pollution and a flourishing natural ecosystem. Over the last two days, Datong River has been carrying out large-scale building works, with excavators driving into the river, destroying wild flowers, weeds and age-old bamboo groves alike. Over and above the towering concrete embankments to ‘protect’ the riverbanks, concrete was also found in the riverbed, which means we can wave goodbye to the thriving natural ecosystem and Datong River can join the arrogant modern fad of turning beautiful rivers into ‘concrete gutters’. On the 28th of November last year, the county government celebrated the completion of a fish ladder on Daku River, where County Mayor Wu, Chih-Yang vowed to implement a more ecologically friendly way of carrying out river construction works in the future. These environmentally destructive building works have left the county government with a lot of egg on its face and caused many citizens to sigh with dismay.

大同溪是大堀溪的支流，雖然不長，但是上游還保有一些野溪的風情。大堀溪文化協會在前年八月做生態調查，捕獲長臂蝦和牛屎鯽，是難得的中等以上汙染水質河 段，生態豐富。這兩天，大同溪某河段正在大興土木，怪手開進河道，野花野草、岸邊成長多年的竹林、苦苓樹全遭剷除，除了聳立的水泥壁面成為護岸之外，公民 記者還發現連河床也打上水泥，大同溪從此告別野溪的雅致，加入台灣傲世的三面光水利工程，加入「水溝」的行列。去年11月28日，縣府在大堀溪畔舉辦魚梯 竣工典禮，吳志揚縣長宣示會以更友善的方式對待桃園縣的溪流。如今桃園縣政府用這種打自己嘴巴的方式來「友善」溪流，真是讓人不敢領教。
