Banishing the bullfrog – Miaoli County Government drag their feet

The incident involving Miaoli County Government, where the non-native Bullfrog was mistakenly introduced into Taiwanese ponds has already been going on for over a week. Apart from the 9th May, when as a result of the huge media coverage, an active show was put on to catch many Bullfrogs and remove them from ponds in the area, the attitude of authorities to the handling of this issue has been anything but acceptable. The department responsible for handling the affair issued a press release expressing that since the 8th of May, Miaoli County Government had been earnestly striving to capture and remove all Bullfrogs, and expected to complete the job within a week. Associate Professor at the Ecology Department in Providence University, Yang Guo Zhen, expressed that following its introduction into Taiwan, it is highly likely that the Bullfrog will very quickly take control of Taiwanese ponds and demoralize the eco-system.

After a week of investigation the CJ reporting the story discovered that Bullfrogs were as prevalent as ever in all of the local ponds. Yang Guo-zhen expressed that the people of today show little concern for nature and Hong Wei-feng, secretary-general of Miaoli Conservation Group, expressed that Miaoli County Government must be more proactive in catching and removing Bullfrogs from our ponds.  No one would like to see the Bullfrog disaster’s influence expand, and so it is hoped that Miaoli County Government start to show more responsibility and sincerity with regards to this event.

苗栗縣政府烏龍放流外來種牛蛙事件至今一個多禮拜了，除了5月9日因為各大媒體採訪，展現了撈除牛蛙的決心外，之後卻態度不夠積極，主管單位農委會林務局 還發了一則新聞稿指出，” 苗栗縣政府切實從善如流於5月8日開始進行捕捉並移走，預定1星期內可完成全部移除作業。靜宜大學生態系楊國禎副教授表示，當牛蛙進到台灣來以後，牠就有 可能在很短的時間內，把整個水池所有食物鍊的東西都全部禮牠搜括，讓整個生態體系全部崩潰崩解。公民記者在一周後實地訪查，發現各個池中的牛蛙還是明顯易 見，楊國禎表示，我們現在的社會，環境不是當權者他們在乎的；而苗栗自然生態學會洪維鋒理事長也表示，苗栗縣政府應該更積極的處理移除牛蛙。各界都不樂見 苗栗縣的牛蛙事件災情擴大，希望苗栗縣政府積極的拿出誠意解決事情。
