University Campus Chief Editor’s Meeting– Fostering Citizen Journalist Seedlings

In April and November of 2010, universities from all over Taiwan took part in the ‘University Campus Chief Editor’s Meeting’, raised by PeoPo, in the hope of pushing forward the development of Citizen Journalism through exchange and on-line interaction. Participating universities included Chinese Culture University, National Chung Cheng University, Shih Hsin Universtiy, National Dong Hwa University, Chang Jung Christian University, Nanhua University, Southern Taiwan University, Tzu Chi University, I-Shou University, Fu Jen Catholic University, Providence University, Tamkang University, Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages and Asia University.

The University Campus Chief Editors’ Meeting is aimed at bringing about more inter-school cooperation and exchange, allowing schools to understand the operations and situation of each other’s media departments. Representatives from each of the universities selected a news story and explained their school’s operational process for newsgathering. In addition, PTS invited senior persons in the media to share their valuable advice and suggestions on the process of news making.

The highlight of this meeting for the participating chief editors was most definitely the opportunity to meet ‘PeoPo News’ anchor Wang Qing-ling and step into her shoes for a brief period of time. Wang Qing-ling shared her experience and insight behind the lens as the anchor and then invited the students to step up and give it a go.

The University Chief Editor’s Meeting has been instrumental in bringing about cooperation between schools and local organizations, which has consequently strengthened the content of stories through more scope and depth in the news gathering process. This will most certainly prepare the ground for much more high quality newsgathering and build a bridge between schools and the many local grassroots organizations. This will in turn will raise the visibility and voice of students nationwide and cultivate future citizen journalists ensuring a brighter and more abundant media environment in Taiwan.

而校園總編輯會議的另一個重頭戲,就是參與「PeoPo公民新聞報」錄影,主持人王晴玲和現場工作同仁,和同學們分享影棚錄製之後,同學陸續上場當主播,親身經歷錄影作業。
