Tourist Destruction Disturbs Residents
As a result of last year’s cat exhibition, and the steady stream of related information circulated on the Internet, recently, tourist numbers have risen to unprecedented levels. According to Houdong station master daily tourist numbers have risen to around 500, with over 1000 on weekdays and holidays. Unfortunately, a small number of tourists have caused a great deal of disturbance to the residents of Guang Fu Village. Local residents have indicated that the two families situated at the very south end of town have suffered continual disturbance. One tourist, who in spite of clear restrictions, emptied a large bag of cat food onto the ground. The subsequent encircling of the area to restrict feeding of cats met similar unacceptable behavior with the barrier being destroyed.
The situation has gone as far as young lovers climbing onto the roof of resident’s homes to take pictures and rushing into local villager’s homes. Locals are not surprisingly fed up with these and similar kinds of unacceptable behavior. From a purely practical viewpoint, streets full of cat food turn into a dangerous slippery hell in rainy weather, not to mention the fact that it is the perfect breading ground for mosquitoes and other insects. Some tourists have blatantly disregarded locals’ instructions or simply paid no attention. Locals have no option but to silently accept the nonchalant manner of tourists. While still interested in pursuing tourist development in the area, locals are looking to the relevant government department to come up with a plan to solve the problems of tourist numbers and the related disturbances.
