In Alishan’sLaLauya village, 12 families rely on a suspension bridge to get to and from home.  With severe damage to roads in the farming district, locals were left no option but to take charge of the situation and repair the bridge. As early as 1996, the bridge sustained damage with Typhoon Herb, and at that time plans were put in place to rebuild the suspension bridge.  After 13 years of continual repairs and waiting, a plan to rebuild the bridge was finally passed, but to everyone’s disappointment Typhoon Morokot struck and swept the bridge away.  With such a long and tedious evaluation and planning process, including the design procedure with initial, mid and end term reports, villagers couldn’t help from asking whether it was going to take another 13 years to get a new bridge built.  Worried that they would be unable to transport their agricultural produce to the markets on time, locals decided to take the initiative and build a makeshift road to transport their goods.
