I Can Only Write a Poem For You – For the White Dolphin
Taiwan’s Chinese Petroleum Corporation is currently in the planning stage of a land reclamation project to build a factory, on the coastline of Changhua County. The Taiwanese government has sold the Chinese Petroleum Corporation 2000 hectares of coastline at the surprisingly low price of around 3 USD per square meter.
Taiwanese environmental groups have responded by organizing a ‘Buy Changhua Coastline Fundraising Movement’ and hope to purchase the land and preserve it for posterity.
The Taiwanese poet Wu Sheng has stepped forward and composed a poem to express his heartfelt feelings toward this piece of coastline. He was unable to hold back the tears as he passionately recited the poem at a press conference.
I Can Only Write a Poem For You
This is a place of rivers and the ocean,
A place of convergence bound deep with emotions,
Fiddler Crabs, Mudskippers, Eastern Curlews, Corncrakes,
Together in the great wetland play,
The little Egret’s feeding home,
The Chinese White Dolphin’s migration corridor,
Named as ‘Chinese Petroleum Corporation’s’ petroleum factory,
Pressing in ever closer, to the distressed western coast,
The last surviving piece of mudflat,
Named as‘ Construction’Betraying the customs of the estuary,
Waving their menacing unbridled flag of doom.
