Niu-tou-si Farm Cattle School: Reviving traditional farming memories
Since the advent of industrialization, mechanized cultivators have gradually replaced the scene of cattle in the fields, and the friendship between man and cattle has steadily faded. Niu-tou-si Farm Cattle School(牛頭司耕牛學堂) in Yilan is dedicated to preserving this tradition. It aims to evoke nostalgic memories of cattle working in the fields and revive this dying culture.
The Dutch introduced farm cattle when they arrived in Taiwan, setting up Niu-tou-si (the cattle division). Relying on cattle for cultivation and transportation, agricultural productivity in Taiwan witnessed a steady rise. Even though cattle farming is no longer the farming mode of modern society, Niu-tou-si Farm Cattle School hopes that through education and publicity, this declining traditional farming culture will one day be valued again by the people.
