Fatna’s Story: Giving Girls the Chance to Learn
The two three-day set of lesson plans in this unit is designed to raise awareness of the impact of gender inequality in education and how it can be overcome. This unit highlights the real life story of Fatna, a 14-year-old girl from Darfur, Sudan who has escaped the conflict there and is now living in a refugee camp in Chad.
Fatna’s Story: Giving Girls the Chance to Learn is a unit of two lesson plans designed to:
- Raise awareness of the impact of gender inequality in education
- Help students understand how educating women also benefits their children
- Familiarize students with strategies to increase gender equality in education
- Demonstrate the progress that is being made in improving access to education for girls and women
As you explore this issue with your students, we hope it elicits a fruitful discussion of the causes of gender inequality, its global impact, what strategies are being implemented by organizations like UNICEF to improve the situation, and an interest in exploring, addressing, and resolving critical global issues
