The old name for the town of Yangmei Fugang was Bogonggang, which means “a small plateau for the Earth God.” In Hakka settlements, Bogong, which means “the Earth God" in Hakka, is the most popular folk belief.

Bogonggang was originally a rural settlement until a stroke of good fortune brought the railroad through the town. After the railway station was built, the town became a local center for trade and distribution and a bustling main street developed. However, over the years, road transport gradually replaced the importance of railways, and Bogonggang Old Street fell on hard times. In recent years, local people have worked hard to rekindle the former glory days of Bogonggang and attract tourists to come and enjoy the traditional flavor of Bogonggang Old Street following its regeneration.
