Campus fermentation bins transform lunch waste into compost
When lunchtime ends, upper-grade elementary students roll up their sleeves and begin carting trollies of kitchen waste out as part of their midday work routine. Just like many other countries, Taiwan has a massive problem with kitchen waste, and school lunches make up a small part of the larger problem. To encourage people to make use of food waste and promote environmental education, Taiwan Composting Association has installed composting bins in many schools throughout Taiwan.
The association’s food waste composter is so simple and easy to use that even young elementary school students are up to the job. Using composted kitchen waste in campus gardens not only provides nourishing vegetables and greens up schools but also plants the seeds of environmental protection in the hearts and minds of children.
