Voice of the Bunun conquers the world
In July of this year, Bao Lai Junior High School Choir from Liugui District in Kaohsiung snatched gold at the 10th World Choir Games in Tshwane, South Africa. Living in settlements scattered throughout the Jade Mountain range, the Bunun people are guardians of Taiwan’s high mountains. They possess a beautiful blend of open-minded optimism for life coupled with modesty and bashfulness.
Living at high elevation has gifted the Bunun people with a sonorous voice, and their eight-part harmony is a registered intangible heritage asset. Hopefully, the joy and innocence conveyed through their voices will introduce Taiwan and the Bunun culture to more people around the world, and help give confidence and encouragement to their children.
Being able to sing high up in the clouds is a wonderful thing; ensuring that future generations of Bunun kids can do the same, will require practical support and assistance from us all.
