Following Laonong River: Rebuilding Baolai
Most people are unfamiliar with the village of Baolai in Kaohsiung; however, in fact, before Typhoon Morakot wrought severe destruction on the area, practically wiping out the local tourist industry, Baolai was a well-known hot spring resort. Aside from the hot spring industry, another important source of income for locals used to be rafting. Sadly, floodwaters during the typhoon shifted massive amounts of earth and stone from landslides, wholly transforming the river’s terrain.
Fortunately, after many years of hard work from local people earnestly striving to rebuild the area, things are finally on the up. Through the establishment of a village hub that provides a whole host of workshops, it is hoped tourists will once again begin traveling to Baolai in their droves.
