Located in Taipei’s Mucha District, Sifa New Village(舊司法新村) has been lying derelict for ten years. In the eyes of Shunxing’s chief of village and other local residents, however, these dilapidated buildings constitute a little piece of paradise where they are able to grow a wide assortment of seasonal vegetables, bringing some life back to the ruins.

Shunxing Village Garden has been established just over a year and has forty-six small vegetable plots within. Forty of the plots are leased out to local residents at a monthly rate of NT$100, and the other six are used by volunteers to grow vegetables. Vegetables produced from the garden are used to provide a free communal lunch each Wednesday for local senior citizens and people from vulnerable families. Despite the fact that the plots are small and harvests correspondingly limited, the men and women growing vegetables here work extremely hard on their plots, displaying a real sense of cherishing the land.
