Tourist Angels’ Service Squad gives Beitou a new look
Taipei City’s ‘Beitou Tourist Angels’ Service Squad’ was formed by Peitou Association (八頭里仁協會) and Xingxiuhai Scout Group (星宿海童軍團). With the aim of resolving any difficulties that tourists may encounter, two groups each comprising of three people took up their new duties in October. The ‘tourist angels’ patrol Zhongshan Road and Guangming Road every Saturday from 3 until 5 pm, giving detailed explanations to any enquiring tourists.
At the same time, the angels are protecting the ecological development of Beitou Stone – also known as Hokutolite – and Beitou Stream. Beitou stone is considered one of the finest regional precious ores in Taiwan. However, unbeknown to the vast majority of people visiting the area, soaking one’s feet in the stream adversely affects the generation of this precious ore; fortunately, Beitou Tourist Angels are helping to gradually spread this important information.
Another important aspect to the group is building roots within the community through the recruitment of students and local youngsters to fill patrol positions. Training given to these youngsters prior to taking up a position with the tourist angels is helping them to fully appreciate the beauty of Beitou.
