Haidian Junior High sports ground extension–community residents call to save white cedar tree
Located in the green space between Haidian Junior High and Haidian Elementary School, the white cedar is a popular spot for local residents and students to cool off in the shade after an athletic workout. Following a decision by Haidian Junior High to move the white cedar in order to extent the school sports ground, parents from the local community expressed their concern at the low probability of successfully transplanting the tree and a negotiation meeting was convened with Tainan City Government. At the meeting, Haidian High School accepted a suggestion from tree-protection activists to prune the tree instead of transplanting.
Local residents expressed the opinion that since trees are getting continually scarcer, we should strive to avoid transplanting. Planted 20 years ago when the school was built, the white cedar tree has grown along with the school and holds memories for countless people. By endeavoring to take care of the trees at Haidian Junior High School, an optimal school environment could be provided for the next hundred years.
