Flood water engulfs Taitung’s Hong-ye hot spring once again
During Typhoon Morakot, the raging waters engulfed Hong-ye (紅葉) hot springs in Yenping Township, Taitung. Following a two-year rebuilding project, last year the hot springs finally opened again for business. In a bid to avoid a repeat of the situation and minimize damages, the bathing area was moved to the highest area on site, and the area that had been flooded during typhoon Morakot was transformed into an activity area and parking lot.
However, on September 9, Typhoon Usagi struck and the swollen river once more engulfed the area, submerging the activity area and parking lot. Village mayor, Hu Rong-dian (胡榮典) said that this time the flooding only affected the parking lot and that the rebuilding project would continue. He added that they hoped to increase the height of the flood-protection embankment and would ask the relevant water conservation department would carry out river dredging on Luye River (鹿野溪).
He added that although he had expected the area to suffer further typhoon damage at some point, he never imagined it would be so soon. In the coming days he will meet with the River Management Office (河川局) and Tourism Bureau (縱管處) to discuss how to deal with the matter.
