Nanshi 1000-year eco band strikes a rhythm with plastic bottles
Dacun Township in Changhua County is famous for the production of grapes. In order to encourage the participation of male residents in community activities and give locals a bit of fun outside their busy farming schedule, Huang Yu-he (黃玉河), secretary-general of Nanshi Community Development Association (南勢社區發展協會), formed ‘Smart Men, Spicy Mama Percussion Troupe’.
By using famous Taiwanese folk songs, and swopping the piano melody for hand gestures, teacher Yao Shun-long (姚順隆) helped the elderly locals make a natural transition into the world of music. Hard-of-hearing troupe member You Xiu-zhi (游秀枝), who used colored strips to decorate PET bottles believes the music class is a lot more fun than working the fields.
These ecologically aware percussionist troupe members, who have an average age of 75, have recycled and decorated bottles and jars from home to create percussion instruments, allowing them to tap along to the rhythm of songs, and inject a new burst of fun into their lives.
