The electrical fix-it granddad – Helping society bit by bit
Through the help of a kind teacher, in his youth the now 86-year-old granddad Li Shui-bo (李水波) was able to travel to Japan where he studied machinery. Nowadays, he is nicknamed ‘the machine doctor’, and his years of experience are clearly visible on his two hands. Many electrical fans presumed a lost cause have received a new lease of life after passing through the expert hands of Li Shui-bo, once more blowing a cool calming breeze on their owner. With regards to Li Shui-bo’s competence in the knowledge of machinery, this was acknowledged after he was personally praised by ex-Taiwanese president Chiang Ching-kuo (蔣經國) after developing a sugarcane machine; of course Li Shui-bo was extremely proud.
Li Shui-bo’s retirement years were anything but easy, after his eldest son’s career failed and began suffering from psychological problems, forcing Li Shui-bo to spend every last drop of money from his savings. Through the help of the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (家扶中心), Li Shui-bo was able to ensure his grandsons grew up fit and strong, and Li Shui-bo vowed he would repay society by providing a free electrical device maintenance service.
Li Shui-bo has incredible respect for both the teacher that helped him travel abroad to study and Taiwan Fund for Children and Families, and it is mainly out of gratitude to them that Li Shui-bo wishes to repay society at large. At present, Li Shui-bo grows vegetables that he distributes to family and friends and fixes electrical devices for free. This is the tenderness Li Shui-bo wishes to return to society, and he has vowed to continue in this manner until his very last breath!
