Wenlin Yuan Shilin District Wang Family Urban Renewal Project
On the 28th of this month Taipei City Government forcibly expropriated and demolished the Wang family home in Shilin District (士林). In this dispute over urban renewal plans, the Wang family had managed to amass quite a support, which congregated outside the family home on the eve of the proposed demolition. Unfortunately, in the end it was all of no avail, and the demolition went ahead as planned. After supporters of the Wang family cause and students met with a heavy police presence, they marched on Ketagalan Boulevard to petition the government. Some scholars believe that the urban renewal project known as Wenlin Yuan (文林苑) is unconstitutional and are calling on the government to amend the Urban Renewal Act (都市更新條例). Over the course of this dispute citizen journalists have continuously made on-the-scene reports.
