Spring arrives for Typhoon Morokot disaster victims
Families displaced after the Typhoon Morokot disaster were given temporary accommodation while awaiting the completion of permanent dwellings. However, four families who have yet to find permanent dwellings are literally living life day to day after the government posted a notice containing a deadline for vacation of the premises. House occupant Xu Wen-xiong expressed that although he has some temporary work, his wife recently gave birth and as a result he is unable to go out to look for more permanent work – this has left the family living from hand to mouth.
The family was completely dumbfounded on receipt of the eviction notice and Xu Wen-xiong feels that the government has a responsibility to fulfill its promise to the end. On the 15th January tribespeople began moving into their new homes built by the charitable foundation Tzu Chi, who took over responsibility for building work at the New Laiyi Settlement. Tzu Chi expressed that it awaited the approval of the original residents to continue with the third phase of building work and hoped to reach a settlement very soon. Pingtung County Government Social Affairs Department expressed that the families remaining would be treated as a special case and would most certainly be found appropriate accommodation.
