Hazardous waste found in Dadu Estuary threatens ecology (Changhua County Environmental Protection Union (tepucd))

A citizen journalist from Changhua County Environmental Protection Union, who has conducted a long-term study of the hazardous waste pollution situation at the Dadu River Estuary, discovered a pile of bags concealing hazardous waste material stacked in the river. It is now known that the dumping of this waste has had a serious impact on the local ecology, which has raised concerns that contaminated fish from the area may have found their way into the local fish markets and been eaten by innocent local citizens. At the end of December when the citizen journalist revisited the area to check up on the situation, they were shocked to find local anglers fishing at close proximity to the waste materials – possible dioxins and heavy metals. Environmental groups are extremely worried that as these particular kinds of pollutants disperse in water, local fishing waters may be badly polluted which in turn could give rise to a serious health hazard. In addition, as the area has absolutely no warning to inform locals of the dangers the citizen journalist is calling on all citizens to refrain from any kind of fishing in Dadu River Estuary. They hope this will ensure no fish find their way into the local markets.

公民記者彰化縣環保聯盟長期關懷大肚溪口有害廢棄物的狀況，一片用太空包掩蓋的廢棄物長期堆置在大肚溪口，造成的生態影響非常嚴重，公民記者擔心周遭魚類
受到汙染，又被捕捉流入魚市場，讓不知情的民眾吃下肚。12月下旬，公民記者再次現勘了解廢棄物處理現況，結果驚見釣魚客站立在集塵灰(含戴奧辛或重金
屬)堆棄的上方，同時還在鄰近整治場所垂釣，環保團體相當擔心，因為這些廢棄物在空氣中、在水體中(隨潮水)逸散，可能汙染漁業、影響健康。現場也沒有任
何警示牌告知民眾相關危險性，因此公民記者呼籲，民眾勿前往大肚溪口垂釣或漁撈，以免汙染漁產流入市面。
