In 2007 and 2009 migrant workers staged huge demonstrations to appeal for their vacation rights, but after almost two general elections and the pledge of Ma Ying-jeou to safeguard the rights of domestic workers, nothing has changed. In 2003, Taiwan Migrant Worker’s Alliance (MENT) began pushing for changes to the law, and this year, in continuance with the same theme, the alliance has planned a demonstration for the 11th December in Taiwan’s costly Xinyi District where the affluent will be enjoying their day off and indulging themselves. The demonstration aims at raising awareness to the huge class differences in Taiwan and to force political candidates to return the rights of over 200,000 domestic workers who are often struggling to survive in vile conditions and suffering mistreatment. The alliance has stated that vacations and rest time are the most basic labor rights and therefore non-negotiable. Furthermore, it stated that the social welfare system should not discriminate against these most vulnerable sections of our society, and is calling for the public to stand up and fight against this shameful race and class discrimination.

2007
