Er-Jen River quality inspection – Wa Cuo Elementary School educate future generations on environmental awareness
Starting in June 2011, a group of students and teachers from Tainan’s
Hong Wa Cuo Elementary School began documenting the neighboring Er-Jen River.
They traveled to conduct field research, and to experience for themselves
the extent of the pollution problem in the river. To give the children a better
understanding of the river the teacher also taught the history of the river
as part of the class syllabus.
The children boarded makeshift rafts to get a closer look at the scale of
the contamination, and in their kid’s talk made some very interesting observations.
One child commented how it appeared that the water’s color had been mixed in a
painting, another child commenting that it stank, another exclaiming that he was
afraid to get too close. Through this practical experience, the children have been
made aware of the real situation of rivers in the neighboring area, which will help
foster the root of environment consciousness in their young minds.
