PeoPo news platform holds Central Citizen Journalist Gathering

    PTS PeoPo News Platform annually holds a citizen journalist gathering, and the third
session of 2011 was held in Taichung. This third session attracted a mix of 50 individuals,
who are either citizen journalists or members of the public with a keen interest in citizen
journalism; on the day, everyone helped contribute to a cheerful atmosphere.

   A number of citizen journalists were chosen to share their reasons for getting involved
in this field and elaborate on the issues that have drawn their attention. Taoyuan’s CJ ‘dkriver’expressed that he felt left with no alternative but to get involved in citizen journalism after a stream of environmental pollution breaches in his native county. He added that the magnitude of the problem leaves him with an endless supply of stories to cover. He hopes that through the medium of media more people can be made aware of important environmental issues.

   Pingtung’s CJ‘nature 23’commented that after a story on the reconstruction of a military
dependants building failed to attract mainstream media attention he decided to get involved in citizen journalism. By uploading the footage onto the PeoPo Platform he hoped to open the story up for discussion. One CJ from the indigenous tribes of Taiwan shared their hope that through citizen journalism more people will hear the voice of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples.

   The gathering also welcomed the renowned ecological specialist Professor Chen Yu-feng from the Dept. of Ecology, Providence University, who is at the forefront of Taiwan’s environmental  protection movement. Professor Chen encouraged citizen journalists to continue their efforts in  fighting for the conservation of their homeland.

  PeoPo公民新聞平台每年都會舉辦公民記者聚會，2011年的第三場在台中聚辦，50多位來自全台灣各地的公民記者以及關心公民新聞的民眾，帶著欣喜的心情參與聚會。

   會中安排了多位公民記者分享參與公民新聞的原因以及關注的公民報導議題，桃園的公民記者大堀溪小兵很無奈地提到，因為家鄉的汙染問題不斷，所以他的報導題材做不完。他希望以影片紀錄來讓更多人關心環境生態的議題。

  屏東的公民記者nature23提到，因為關心的眷村改建問題，無法得到商業媒體的報導，因此決定自己拍新聞，放在PeoPo上讓更多人一起討論。也有原住民公民記者記者表示，希望透過公民報導讓原住民的心聲能夠被更多人聽到。

  聚會中也請到台灣生態保育界的重量級老師靜宜生態系教授陳玉峰專題演講，並鼓勵公民記者發揮力量，為台灣這片土地盡份心力。
