Amis tribesmen perform war dance in defiance of Dulan property development

   Taiwan is actively promoting tourism, especially in the beautiful stretch
of eastern coastline between Hualian and Taitung, the target for many large
property developers. There seems to be no end to local government BOT projects
that develop well-known scenic areas, but these raise environmental conservation
issues, in addition to creating a conflict of interest with the local people.

   Dulan Bay, which is the traditional territory of the Amis Tribe (also known
as the the Pangcah Tribe), already has one large hotel, constructed in a BOT
project. To express their opposition to the proposed plan, the local Amis tribesmen
dressed in traditional dress to perform a war dance.

  A young Amis tribesman expressed that Dulan Bay is an area of major traditional
importance to the tribe, and that large property developers’ claims of providing
important job opportunities for the area is a facade. For the Amis Tribe, loss of
the area would mean a loss of the opportunity to keep the tribe bound by ancient
cultures and traditions. They hope that local government learns to respect the
traditional tribal laws and protect the rights of indigenous people.

   台灣積極推展觀光，尤其風景秀麗的花東成為很多財團想要進駐開發的目標，地方政府的
BOT案不少就選在著名景點，也產生環境保護問題以及和在地民眾利益的衝突。台東阿美族的
傳統領域都蘭灣，就有財團興建大型的美麗灣飯店。

   世居在此的阿美族人日前穿著傳統服飾，跳著勇士護衛舞，表達反對開發案的立場。阿美族
青年表示，都蘭灣是阿美族重要的傳統領域，大型觀光飯店進駐宣稱可以帶來工作機會，但這只
是表象，失去了傳統領域的原住民族，將喪失文化紮根延續的機會。希望政府單位能夠落實原住
民基準法，保護原住民生存的權益。
