French attack Taiwan – The Sino-French war

In 1884, the French military invaded Taiwan. At that time, Taiwan’s Huwei (ancient name for Tamsui) residents put up great struggle and resistance to beat back the French aggressors. In order to reenact this Sino-French War and display the bravery of those Tamui residents, New Taipei City’s Tamsui District Office has put on a large-scale outdoor theater performance in the place where the actual attack took place, Tamsui Huwei Fort Park.

The most surprising thing about the representation of this historical war, a story that depicts great heroism in face of an enemy, is the fact that it has been completely organized by the Tamsui residents. Owing to a lack of resources, residents not only volunteered themselves for acting roles, but also stitch by stitch and blow by blow, made all of the props and costumes. 
  
The success of this historically rich performance has not only allowed the residents of Tamshui to deeply understand a Sino-French war that took place on their doorsteps, but also highlighted the awesome power of community spirit.

法國出兵臺灣 中法戰爭再度開打

西元1884年，法國軍隊出兵攻打台灣，當時台灣滬尾的居民奮力抵抗，擊退了來襲的法軍。為了重現當年滬尾民眾英勇抗敵的故事，新北市淡水區公所在當年戰爭發生地滬尾砲台公園，以戶外大型劇場方式演出，重現當年中法戰爭的情境。

最特別的是這場重現歷史的戰爭，完全是由淡水居民參與，演出先祖抗敵的故事。由於資源缺乏，民眾不但義務參與演出，包括演出的戲服以及道具，都是成立了工作坊，由志工民眾一針一線縫製出來的。

 這場具有歷史意義的演出，讓淡水人更了解當年中法戰爭的歷史，更成功凝聚了淡水居民的向心力。
