Even though classes don’t start until 7 o’clock, however Yanping Community College teacher Pan Chung-cheng, who is nicknamed Dk-river, always promptly arrives at 6:30 sharp. He begins the class by first instructing students how to operate the computer editing software, and solves any troublesome issues. The class then begins discussing the day’s material, which has been emailed to the students the previous week. Pan Chung-cheng’s Citizen Journalism class, which is comprised of students from all walks of life who happily share their diverse life experience, is continually full of animated discussions and the hearty sound of laughter. Teacher Pan’s direction and facilitation skills inject energy into topical issues, helping generate more debate.

‘I don’t mind if it’s other people’s kids, as long as it’s not mine!’ – With most of the students having kids of their own, teacher Pan decided to ask the class their thoughts on the topic of homosexuality, with the question, “Would you approve of your child being homosexual?”, which aroused lots of serious discussion. Teacher Pan then wrote down another question: “Is it appropriate to decide the gender issue by voting?” – this really got the students thinking! Teacher Pan believes that this kind of stimulation is the starting point for us to really look deeply at the world, and helps to assist citizen journalism students deepen their awareness and scope of vision regarding society – the classroom style is built on the principle of, ‘lots of  discussions, no conclusions’.

Before Pan Chung-cheng began teaching at Yanping Community College he spent a period of time covering many important environmental issues as a citizen journalist, known as Dk-river. On one occasion after a citizen journalist meeting, Teacher Pan received a letter from college director, Chun Jung-chu, inviting him to give a speech at the college, beginning his career as a community college lecturer.

Teacher Pan humbly remarked, “I was terrified at the beginning”, stressing that he still needed a lot of more training and development in the field. He hopes that through access to a wide range of related teaching and reference materials, students can gain substantial media knowledge as well as an understanding of common sense principles of citizen journalism. In this flourishing garden of citizen journalism, Pan Chung-cheng is an assiduous gardener.
