At the beginning of July this year, a rabbit-breeding farm in Taichung closed abandoning 32 rabbits. Fortunately an animal protection group stepped forward to rescue the animals from the gates of hell, however with so many rabbits, there is an urgent need for loving citizens come and adopt them. Among the group of rabbits are those suffering from “torticollis”, which means the rabbit’s head will never straighten, and those with leg deformities, sentencing them to a lifetime of dragging their hind legs. Some of the rabbits will die young due to contracting various diseases or because of improper housing conditions.

Although animal protection groups came to save the rabbits from the gates of a terrible fate, however no matter how much love the group has for the animals, they have found it impossible to keep up with the sheer number and speed of rabbits being abandoned. In only six months, Taipei Rabbit Association has taken in around 157 rabbits, and the number appears to be steadily rising. While some of the rabbits come from families and individuals, however a huge number come from rabbit-breeding farms. Generally speaking, these rabbits are either, sick and diseased, or are unpopular breeds that the farms cannot sell. Even though under the Animal Protection Act, those discarding rabbits or deliberately harming them can face a fine of up to half a million NTD, however, animal protection groups have said that unless breeding farms are properly managed the problem is set to get worse. Citizen journalists are calling on the Council of Agriculture to take the problem in hand and properly manage the pet-rabbit industry.

今年七月初，台中有一處兔子的繁殖場、倒去，三十二隻兔子被棄養，現在動保團體把這些兔子，從鬼門關救回來，數量很多，需要民眾來認養。其中有兔子罹患了「斜頸症」，頭永遠只能歪成一百八十度，而還有後肢變形，一輩子都要拖著畸形的腳。這些兔子全是七月初，被台中一家繁殖場遺棄的，有的小生命因為感染病菌或不當照顧而生病，動保團體把牠們從鬼門關前救回來，不過再多的愛心，還是追不上兔子被棄養的速度，台北市愛兔協會光上半年，就收容了 157隻棄兔，而且數量還會繼續增加，除了民眾棄養，更大宗來自於繁殖業者、淘汰賣相不好或是生病的兔子。雖然根據動保法，遺棄兔子，甚至蓄意造成兔子死亡，最重可罰五十萬，不過動保團體表示，如果不從繁殖的源頭來管理，根本無法杜絕棄養，公民記者呼籲農委會應該拿出重視狗的決心，來好好管理寵物兔這個領域。
