Japan’s nuclear disaster rouses anti-nuclear protests: 317 Petition

Japan’s myth of ‘safe nuclear power’ has been shattered, and has forced people from all over the world, including Taiwan, to clearly distinguish what is a ‘natural disaster’ and what is a ‘human disaster’. On the morning of the 17th of March, representatives from 10 NGO’s along with residents of Gung-liao congregated in front of the Executive Yuan and called for the abandonment of Taiwan’s fourth nuclear power plant in an appeal to save Taiwan. Protestors from different countries faced the Executive Yuan and took them on one by one, expressing their heartfelt hopes that the government will see the light and abandon this fourth nuclear power plant. 501 nuclear power plants spanning 31 countries constitutes the worlds biggest danger to human health – a fact the Taiwanese people cannot pretend is not their business.

Many foreign friends are also deeply concerned over the nuclear crisis in Japan, including a French former health consultant at the Japanese power station, who is anxious with worry for the health of the Japanese people. Japanese and Korean protestors used a traditional form of Asian prayer to send their best wishes and best wishes to the Japanese people. The anti-nuclear music band ‘No Nuke’ used their upbeat style to liven things up and get the protestors going as well as singing their best wishes to the Japanese people. The protestors had wished for Executive Yuan’s President Wu Den-yih to come out and personally accept the 317 Petition. After waiting until the fifth group leader’s turn to take to the stage the protestors had finally had enough and decided to try ‘plan B’ - to gain access to the toilet in the Executive Yuan and hand over the petition there. The plan failed miserably and the day’s activities ended after protestors left both flowers and the petition at the entrance gate to the Executive Yuan before marching 320 strong on to the streets to express the people’s demands for abolishing nuclear power plants.

日本核電安全神話的破滅，讓世界與台灣人民更能分辨天災與人禍的區別，3/17上午，近十個民間團體陪同貢寮居民一起在行政院前集結，共同表達廢核四、救台灣的心聲。各個民間團體輪番上陣，向行政院與在場人民表達非核台灣的願望， 31國家的502部核電機組，已成為地球的風險擴大器，台灣自不能置身事外。外國朋友也前來關切，包括法國籍的原日本核電員工健康諮詢師，也對日本民眾的健康風險憂心忡忡。日本與韓國的朋友更以行大禮的方式為日本災民祈福。反核樂團No Nuke更以樂聲來激勵在場人士，也一起為日本祈福。雖然在場人士要求吳敦義院長出面接受陳情書，但是卻只等到第五組組長，讓民眾無法接受，醞釀進入行政院上廁所，幾經協調，參加民眾將花擺在入口處，並交出陳情書，結束了今日的活動，並相約320一起走上街頭，表達人民廢核的訴求。
