Farewell to Danshui’s Oldest Street
Danshui Township in Taipei County is a place thatsimply brims with culture and history. Chongjian Street, the oldest street in Danshui, probably best epitomizes and captures this historical atmosphere. However due to the town’s regeneration plan, the street unfortunately seems doomed to vanish. Danshui’s Cultural Foundation called on all former residents of Chongjian St or indeed anyone with deep sentiment towards this issue to gather on the 30th of May in the old street for one last group picture –in remembrance of the old street.
On the day, even though the rain poured down, at the allotted time the street filled with locals, young and old, bringing with them awarm-hearted and peaceful atmosphere. On the eve of the disappearance of the old street, the people used the medium of posing for this picture to express their defiant mood and dissatisfaction.
Scholars and those connected with the arts also strongly hope that through this group photograph they can awaken the sentiments of even more people towards this issue, to look deeper and consider whether or not Danshui’sChongjian Street should be appropriately preserved.
