2010 PeoPo Forum Passionate Interaction Between Study and Practice
The 2010 PeoPo forum, jointly raised between PTS and National Chengchi University’s College of Communication, is inviting academic circles, practical news circles, social movement figures and all concerned with the development of citizen journalism to come and jointly participate. In the past, becoming a journalist required a host of skills, with a professional baptism and technical training. With the advent of citizen journalism however, a greater number of citizens are being given the opportunity to voice out their feelings and pass on the stories that concern them.
Since the establishment of PTS’s citizen news platform in 2007, over 3700 citizens have already became citizen journalists, putting out over 30,000 news stories. This kind of achievement has left teachers from academic circles amazed and astounded. In a speech by Zhong Yu-wen, dean of National Chengchi University’s College of Communication, he remarked that although the past media era perhaps belongs to academic circles, however according to trends in recent history the future will most definitely belong to the people.
The evolution from traditional journalism to citizen journalism represents the maturing of Taiwanese society and the awakening of citizen journalism consciousness. Participants will begin by sharing their ideas on media from several perspectives, ‘new media-new citizens’, ‘highlighting issues through citizen journalism’, ‘broadening the effectiveness of citizen journalism’, and ‘the future development of citizen journalism’.
Participation and enthusiasm are the two most essential factors for citizen journalists. Through the forum’s exchange we willbring together academic teachers and citizen journalists, allowing us to confidently look forward to the continued development of Taiwan’s citizen journalism with more opportunities for citizens to voice out at the grassroots level.
