With the hope of promoting a ‘friendly campus’, Guei Ren Junior High School in Tainan County are raising many rare as well as cute animals, and as a result animal silhouettes can be seen all over the campus, including Mallards, Formosan serow and the rarely seen Formosan Sika Deer. Students are undertaking the job of cleaning out the animal’s pens and the student liaison teacher has formulated a special biology lesson around the animals, allowing remedial students to participate in the looking after of Formosan Sika Deer with the hope of fostering a love for study within them. Although the project has been running for only a brief time, and a decision of success or failure is still pending, however the school has a plan to raise even more animals, hoping students can through the interplay with the animals learn respect for life.
