With declining birthrates, many primary and secondary schools in rural areas face forced merging or abolition. In Miaoli County, Fuxing Wushu Primary and Secondary School has transformed itself into a school specializing in martial arts, achieving outstanding results in many competitions.
When he first arrived, the coach said that Fuxing had only thirty or so students and was teetering on the edge of being abolished. The school was saved thanks to the hard work of the local village director, who helped refashion the school into a martial arts academy. Fuxing is now the only school in Taiwan that specializes in martial arts. Since the school’s transformation, new school buildings and playground facilities have been erected, and a number of martial arts halls have been built, greatly improving the campus environment and school facilities.
