Fear of Flooding – Villagers of LinBien Township in PingTung County Raise Houses in Bid to Establish Anti-flood Measures

The local people of LinBian Township in PingTung County in southern Taiwan, an area plagued by subsidence, are using jacks to raise homes above the flood danger zone, in an effort to prevent damage to property and dwellings.  This kind of engineering project is becoming the trend in the region and has given birth to a somewhat unusual landscape.  In last year’s Typhoon Morakot, the densely populated NeiWu Village was severely affected by flooding resulting in serious losses to property.   Residents of the area are understandably fearful of another similar episode this year, and so with the flood season approaching they are anxious to quickly put these anti-flood measures in place.

屏東縣林邊鄉 處於易淹水的地層下陷區，當地民眾想出「舉厝」方法預防身家財產受到損失，請來民間工程單位，利用千斤頂將房子抬高以防水患，這種工程在林邊相當盛行，也 形成特殊的地方景觀。去年八八水災造成林邊溪潰堤，洪水夾帶著泥沙湧進林邊鄉人口稠密的內五村，造成嚴重的損失。林邊人淹水淹怕了，在今年汛期來臨之時， 趕緊「舉厝」防範。
