Increased tourist numbers on Suhua Expressway vexes locals
The endless azure blue of sky and ocean and the seemingly boundless stream of boats leave a deep impression on Nanao visitors. However, since the completion of the new Suhua Expressway, the number of tourists visiting Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung on Taiwan's east coast has significantly increased. The large numbers of tourists have resulted in traffic congestion, causing severe inconvenience to local people's lives.
The fact that frequent traffic jams and the large volume of tourists have not translated into a significant benefit for local businesses has added insult to injury. Furthermore, despite Suao Police Precinct actively setting up contingency measures to slow the traffic tide, due to COVID-19 restrictions from traveling abroad, it has been largely ineffective at curbing tourist numbers. It appears that it may well be some time before the current traffic congestion problem is solved.
