Indigenous city kids search for roots to narrow the distance with their tribal culture
At 12.6%, Shulin District has the highest proportion of Indigenous people in New Taipei City. Indigenous people living in urban areas tend to gradually lose contact with their tribal culture as they integrate into society. Therefore, Shulin High School developed a program to help Indigenous city kids better understand their culture and identity. Through providing a platform for exchange and learning between different Indigenous peoples, Indigenous kids are encouraged to generate self-confidence and pride in their heritage.
The school’s Indigenous Crafts Program not only helps Indigenous kids better understand their culture but also gives kids a sense of identity and belonging. It is hoped that through the course, many more people will get to know about the unique cultural treasures on the island of Taiwan.
