Environmental education along the Erren River
In the past, the Erren River was contaminated by the scrap metal recycling industry along the coast. The 1986 Green Oyster Incident sent a shockwave throughout Taiwan, not only devastating the entire aquaculture industry but also wiping out all living things in the river. Nowadays, many groups have begun to promote conservation through ecological river tours, which give people a firsthand understanding of the importance of the environment and the impact it has on our lives.
Kaohsiung Cieding Sampan and Raft Association used to be a fishermen's group. However, when local fish catches began to seriously decline due to heavy pollution, members took the initiative to start regulating the river. In recent years, they have also cooperated with many schools to promote ecological education, allowing students to visit the Erren River and discuss environmental issues together.
