Wearing an Asian conical hat and raincoat, this ferryman has braved the wind and rain for the last 20 years. This is Taiwan's last remaining man-powered ferry, continuing a tradition that has been operating over a hundred years since 1881. In the past, it served as an essential transportation hub in Xindian, ferrying residents back and forth across the river.

Along with the gradual development of transportation, the public's dependence on ferryboats declined. Despite insufficient manpower and low demand, the ferryboat is still kept as a cultural asset. In addition to keeping this ferryboat culture alive for its original transportation function, the district office hopes to add various elements to augment local tourism.

Traveling back and forth across the river to pick up and drop off passengers throughout the day, the myriad ripples emanating out from the ferryboat seem to send good wishes to each person as they disembark and bid the ferryman farewell.
