Yudong Junior High carpentry students chipping out a better future
Unlike most students, whose lives are weighed down with piles of textbooks, the students of Yudong Junior High carpentry class in Yuli Township spend their after-school and holiday time in the carpentry classroom making furniture. The students hope to turn their lives around through the sweat of their own brow.
Traditional Eastern education tends to spoon-feed children and fill them full of book-knowledge. However, students at Yudong Junior High take part in hands-on engraving and furniture-making projects outside the usual coursework, which teach many things you can’t learn from books. Yudong Junior High, which has been dedicated to its carpentry class for over a decade now, hopes the public will give more attention and support to the aspirations of children from rural areas of Taiwan.
