Dalin’s Holoized Hakka: Searching for Hakka roots
Despite having many distinctive characteristics of Hakka culture, the town of Dalin in Chiayi is not a traditional Hakka town. Dalin is the place where a great many Hakka people became "Holonized," or assimilated themselves into Holo culture. Now integrated and used to Holo customs and life, they don't speak Hakka, only Holo, and aren't even aware they have Hakka blood.
On visiting the streets of Dalin, you can see a mixture of Holo and Hakka architecture full of cultural significance; even local habits still have some traces of Hakka culture.
Nobody in Dalin now speaks Hakka, but the beliefs, architecture, and lifestyle of Hakka people remain, creating a unique Holonized Hakka culture in the local area.
