Entertaining and educational: Cultural theatre workshops promote glove puppetry
Taiwanese glove puppetry (budaixi) is a form of traditional Chinese opera. Artist Yeh Chang-ching (葉長菁), who formerly lived in France, firmly believes that budaixi has an important role to play in the world of puppetry. To promote this ancient culture of Taiwanese glove puppetry, Yeh holds cultural theatre workshops at regular times each week.
Budaixi, or hand puppetry, is representative of the traditional folk arts and contains many traditional skills, including puppet carving and puppetry hand techniques, which are not easily accessible in daily life. However, through these new workshops, people are now able to learn about these traditional folk skills. Aside from the puppet shows, which are a feast for the eyes of kids and adults alike, practical hands-on workshops are facilitating a more in-depth feel for the beauty of such traditional arts.
